FREE THE FURTHER FIVE!

The CHP let the Bus full of Merry Pranksters go with their FIVE twenty-two dollar tickets for riding without seatbelts and promises to pay them. Driver George Walker's infraction was a bit different because he was the driver and the Merry Pranksters rode on top without seatbelts. George denied everything!

When the Bus turned right off Market Street onto Haight Street, George pulled into a San Franicsco bus stop so the fugitive Pranksters could once again climb on top of the Bus for more fun and continue to play by our own rules. The Bus lunged up and over the hill onto lower Haight Street with its bars and hair salons and nightclubs, boutiques and restaurants, and further up the hill to upper Haight Street with its bars and hair salons and nightclubs, boutiques and restaurants. Haight Street is by far the coolest place to buy shoes in San Francisco! It still teems with youth, until we got there. The old hippies, the dippies, the beats, the whoopies and the candidates came out of the woodwork accompanied by the youth who had read about and wanted to see it. The Bus cruised slowly in parade mode down the fabled street where Capn' Skyp instructed over the Bus sound system to LOAD EM UP. . . READY . . . AIM . . . FIRE... as we pulled into the Bus Stop at Haight and Ashbury throwing hands full of SpitFurther JailJournal BookVentureTour 2003 cards into the crowd at the bus stop. The act was repeated all the way down Haight Street including a barrage in front of our host for the evening, The Booksmith.
The event was at the Park Branch of the San Francisco Library on Page Street one block north of Haight. The Park Branch Library is a sturdy building with a wonderful large room with photographs and displays from the sixties including an archival work in progress documenting the Haight from its inception as a neighborhood. They are looking for photographs of neighborhood events and people to copy for the project. George parallel parked the Bus right in front where we disembarked handing out more cards than Heinz has pickles. Our pal, Rebecca, had the basement meeting room decorated with colorful hangings creating a warm ethereal atmosphere for the readings and Six Kesey Sketches.
We were joined this evening by Pat Monahan who had hopped onto the Bus on Haight Street. Pat was having dinner in advance of the event with his family when the Bus drove by. He ran out of the restaurant up to the Bus and got on never finishing dinner as we drove away with him onboard. Pat is the fine fellow who first produced One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as a play in Sacramento or Davis. He later brought the play to North Beach in the Fox Theater on Pacific Avenue where it still holds the record for longest running play. Chet Helms was there, Wavy Gravy, Matt the mayoral candidate and gosh we just can't remember everyone else because of our short term wholesale memory loss. Remember don't forget or is that don't forget remember?

The evening concluded with a jaunt back up to Haight Street for some nourishment and imbibing. We found a friendly Pub next to Mendelson's Art Supplies where we stocked up on grog and grub. The back room in the Pub was just as delicious as the Library complete with old photos of San Francisco and San Franciscans. We thought about moving there it was so inviting! But we have more to do and further to go.

Next Stop... Sebastopol... back to the country.
