San Francisco
opened its Golden Gate and almost threw us in jail!

Above Wavy Gravy and George Walker tune up for the ride to San Francisco with Zane Kesey getting a lesson on the lute from Wavy. It's always best to get into an appropriate frame of mind for a Bus ride... you never know what lies ahead!

The Bus Further with the Intrepid Traveler and his band of Merry Pranksters were enroute to the Park Branch Library on Page Street in the Haight Wednesday afternoon for a book reading and Prankster performance. As the Bus crossed the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco, the toll takers and officers in the observation booth were amused with the colorful entourage waiving the Bus through the toll booth because there were more than two passengers and the Bus was commuting in the car pool lane. Then, traveling into the Marina down Doyle Drive, three CHP motorcycles followed by two squad cars lit up their lights pulling the Bus load of Pranksters into the parking lot of the Palace of Fine Arts much to the bemusement of the visitors at the Exploratorium. The Pranksters documented the proceedings on digital cameras as seven CHP officers inspected the Bus and Pranksters citing those riding on top of the Bus $22 for not wearing seatbelts which is illegal on the interstate highway. Imagine, the Pranksters arrested for not wearing seatbelts! Forty-five minutes later after autographing books and handing out BookVentureTour cards and posing for photographs with the arresting officers, the Bus Further was cacophonously back on its way through San Francisco to the book reading. Kesey's son Zane remarked... just like dad said, "Put them in your movie!"

The arresting officers admitted they really didn't want to do this but that they were following orders from their female "no tolerance" commander. The arresting officers tolerated the Pranksters flashing cameras and shooting video of the entire scene. Wavy Gravy calmed the excited Bus load playing the lute sitting inside the Bus calming the atmosphere as jokes were made and pranks were conjured.

Once it was determined we were no going to have to spend the night in the custody of Sheriff Hennessey and plead mercy to district attorney Terrance Hallinan, Capn' Skypilot, the Intrepid Traveler and David Cavid took some SpitFurther and Jail Journal books to the officers for their squad room thanking them for not throwing the Bus the band of Merry Pranksters into the hooskow for the evening. Zane commented it was the first time a police officer had climbed onto the top of the Bus apparently to shoot polaroids documenting there were no seatbelts. All issues legal and otherwise settled, the Bus embarked again on its journey through the city of Saint Francis past all of its homeless, further toward Haight Street where we once again boarded up on top coercing the onlookers to Get On The Bus!

Below... David and Babbs cajole the heat.

We hate when that happens... but it didn't dampen our spirits one bit.
WE WENT FURTHER TO THE PARK BRANCH LIBRARY.
